After finally getting my Encinema 35mm DOF adapter from Vid Atlantic,
I was super excited and tried to put it all together without the 2 Macro Lens filters.
I knew it wasn’t going to work, but I wanted to do it anyways…
…sort of like when you’re excited to get a new plastic model and you put it together first without any glue…
…ok…
…maybe not…
Anyways…
As I tried to screw on the 49 mm adapter to the 49 mm OWLE BUBO wide angle lens,
I was totally disappointed to find that it wouldn’t screw on at all!
Was I stupid?
After sitting around like a stupid monkey trying to figure out ways to screw it on,
I realized it wasn’t going to work.
Since I didn’t want to damage the unit in case I had to return it,
I decided to be the adult that I am and move on to find a solution.
I double checked the specs of my BUBO and the DOF adapter that I ordered…
all 49mm and correct…
I checked on the web for any articles or similar cases and found none because it was probably a rare case…
In a last ditch effort, I emailed Vid Atlantic and Owle.
To my pleasant surprise, Vid Atlantic emailed me back within a day and explained that
some OWLE iPhone 4 units had been assembled with a new type of wide angle lens that wasn’t threaded at the end…
great…
that would be me…
in Japan…
With 2 units…
Woohoo~!!
Anyways, they gave me a link to a similar lens on eBay and offered to reimburse me for the lens. Now that’s customer service!!
Thanks Eddie!!
I don’t think they’re doing for everyone so I apologize in advance if this causes a flurry of emails to Vid, but give them a break.
It was nice because I actually bought 2 OWLE BUBO’s with the non-threaded lens
and don’t know what to do with the second one.
It’s not Vid Atlantic’s fault because I didn’t buy 2 DOF adapters…
Come to think of it, it’s probably not even 100% their fault for the first one either…
They said they were working closely with OWLE to fix the problem so I am sure it wasn’t on purpose and everything’s cool.
Either way, if the problem is solved, no problem on my end.
Owle is currently waiting for a new batch of lenses and should be getting back to me.
So if you recently bought a BUBO from this one batch and were planning on attaching
the Encinema 35mm DOF adapter and couldn’t screw it on for the life of you…
now you know why.
Now I wait for my replacement lens and macro lenses and it’s showtime!
UPDATE 12-6-2010 :** En Cinema people were super cool about replacing the lens but OWLE themselves haven’t emailed back. They offered to help via email but after a few weeks,…no response. Either way, ALM LIVE hasn’t replied lately. It’s such a small piece of equipment but so important…I feel “half” ripped off because I can use the unit in wide mode but can’t add the adapters. I’m just gonna buy another adapter and call it a day. If you weren’t gonna help out, you should’ve just ignored me from the beginning.
Today’s Tokyo Next Post:
The wrong way to attach a wide angle lens to your iPhone
Do you still have that second Owle unit? I’m in Tokyo and have searched everywhere for one, but apparently they aren’t sold in Japan. I’d be interested in purchasing yours (at the retail price plus local shipping) if you haven’t returned it to Owle yet.
I bought a OWLE Bubo from vid atlantic too, also with the DOF adapter. But I faced a problem, while I follow the instruction that they gave, and mount it my lens in the adapter. My photo and my picture work great. But the problem is beside my photo n video all black. I live in Tokyo same with u. If u gona discuss about this. Mail me pls. zeshi_0923@hotmail.com
I will mail u the picture that I took. Japanese or English also can. I am a Chinese came from Malaysia.

Thanks for the message. Yes, after using it’s easy to see the benefits and limitations of the setup. For me, it’s not too dark, but waaay too grainy. Are you using Almost DSLR? You might have to adjust the effects in software. I split usage between my 5D, Sony NEX and the iphone etc… so I just look at this as more of a gadget toy.
